sWORD AND KEYBOARD: Menu Based Games ? f2p?

SwordandKeyboard.com Reports:

In my not so humble opinion I think the current saying ''free to play games " or "F2P" is the WRONG wording.

They should be called MENU based games. A term I have heard no one call these f2p games is MENU based.

Because really that is what they are. All games come at a price I don't care what anyone says.

At the very least there is a price on your time alone.

But menu based packaging is good for gaming, it builds communities. Of course your going to get the idiots that spout that ''f2p " encourages those with bad behavior to infect there community or favorite free game or game that's pay but considering a menu based approach.

That is a fail opinion. I have played some of the most exclusive games available some games that cost me a fortune to play.
Those games had just as many idiots as free 2 play games. So people think monitary requirement makes people act like less of an idiot? Wrong.

Infact I have seen thought process I paid to play this game I can say or act poorly, whatever, whenever, I want mentality many times.

Well I am saying what I want... call the F2P market Menu based. Your selecting price packages from a menu
sure some people choose not to pay anything but the name free to play in a way cheapens the sound of the game to many people and is a turn off because of the misconception of bad behavior and low quality player base in ''FP2''.

It has misinterpretation as being a soup kitchen for noob and bottom of the barrel gamer.

Also there is the whole pay to win wallet warrior mantra trap that game developers fall into, because they go for the quick buck rather then ''CARETAKE" there community and games. Small growth over long period is better then money grabs that make good instant cash flow.

Good Example :

Don't make games that if you pay it is a huge advantage, because people will quit before they even to get started.

Make the Menus fair and Xp related rather then gear and damage related. This makes for less instant cash but more balenced community. Plus a happier community.

PVP and You and Me and MMO companies

SwordandKeyboard.com Reports: MMO'S I want satisfaction , Give me !!

Territorial battles. Wanted.  Battlegrounds in every game as the soul way to pvp is disappointing to me.

Here is my reasoning,

I am old school, I have no desire to be a superstar look at me im the best pvper, which make up alot of todays best pvpers(NOT ALL BUT MOST) . We live in a hey look at me society in real life. The places you see real life pvp it is not about hey look at me, its about teamwork.(meaning war or police actions or freedom fighters)

Heck even building a mmo is more about teamwork. every large scale teamwork based game I have really enjoyed. I enjoy a soldier type role. I don't mind taking instruction or orders from someone as long as winning occurs consistently. If the commands make sense I am more then willing to guard or defend or whatever is needed to succeed and have done so in many games. While in war-hammer I was in a guild called Ruin which joined a server dominated by destro faction, they turned the tides with low level players holding back guilds that thought they were PVP pros by using strategy and tactics.

Of all the games I have played warhammer and battlefield europe were the most fun to me because 24 hours a day there was a basttle for territory. It was never ending. Now most games have these stupid battles in a space size of a few football fields, the terrain becomes boring day after day until I quit.

I remember when alteric valley lasted all day long for one battle sometimes longer, then they made it timed. Then it lost the fun factor to me then. Not long after that I quit.

Global agenda promised global war and it ended up just being battleground instanced merrygoround as well.

Just wish someone would come up with persistent battles for territory and loot. One that I could play for a few years. Have tons of ideas on this if only someone would listen lol..

This void in MMO'S is disappointing to me.

feel free to comment.

Sword and Keyboard: Diablo 3 vs Torchlite II

A lot of Hype right now going on for Diablo 3. I am not buying into this, so much hype for a overhead RTS game. It's cool but was cooler in the year 2001 not 2011.

I cannot see dropping 60 bucks for a game like this when you can go by Torchlight on steam for like 20 bucks and looks as good ...personally I would rather support a new company then blizzard which churns out same stuff over and over. Spread the wealth type of thinking.

  • Torchlite 2
  • - mod-able
  • - custom stats
  • - talent tree
  • - LAN!!!
  • - multi-player
  • - offline mode
  • - no online requirement
  • - death penalty
  • - only $20

    • Diablo 3:
    • $59.99
    • - BLIZZARD
    • - p2w
    • - NO lan/mods/talent tree/custom stats and death penalty
    • - online requirement

Intro to Firefall experience and Red 5 STUDIOS

    EXCLUSIVE ARTICLE WRITTEN BY SWORDANDKEYBOARD.COM

When I first saw a clip about Firefall I immediately wanted to know the company name which turned out to be Red5 Studios. Cool name and I am not sure where name came from but I will try and get that info.

Once I found out the name I looked up or tried to get info on the devs. When I read the name Mark Kern bells went off, I knew this company could be a player in the mmo market. I did some research and found out they had a huge backer.  I knew this company would be a company I would have to watch I immediately told people in the guild i'm in.. ...  as usual they ignored me as they probably think I am some schmuck that is clueless.

There most likely thinking what does this old guy know about games LOL. What i am sure is they never realize is the average age of a developer is around 40 years old not 20. Also the older the dev the most success he or she most likely will have from experience of failures that can be used in future work.

Anyway back to my topic...  the CEO of Red 5 Studios here is his minimized resume....

Mark E. Kern is best known for being Team lead on the Massively Multiplayer Online game World of Warcraft and a founder of Red 5 Studios.
    • World of Warcraft (2004), Blizzard Entertainment Inc.
    • Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (2003), Blizzard Entertainment Inc.
    • Diablo II (2000), Blizzard Entertainment Inc.
    • Diablo II (Collector's Edition) (2000), Blizzard Entertainment Inc.
    • StarCraft 64 (2000), Nintendo of America Inc.
    • StarCraft (1998), Blizzard Entertainment Inc.
    • StarCraft: Brood War (1998), Blizzard Entertainment Inc.
    • Star Reach (1994), Interplay Entertainment Corp.

Yeah, holy crap I said to myself, and he is putting together an impressive staff for a FREE TO PLAY   SHOOTER mmo called firefall. Sounds like win.

Planetside 2 Info and Run down

•MASSIVE WARFARE: Battles will take place not between dozens of troops, but hundreds; with air and ground vehicles slugging it out alongside squads of troops. Whether in open fields, tightly-packed urban centers or enormous structures, winning will require strategic teamwork and a quick trigger finger in the massive battles.

•THREE EMPIRES: Players will have their choice to join three different empires:
•Terran Republic - With a militaristic government, the Terran Republic uses its Imperial authoritarian might to impel humanity to peaceful coexistence through any means necessary.
•New Conglomerate - A loosely connected group of rebel factions and idealistic freedom fighters, the New Conglomerate fights against the hegemony of the Terran.
•Vanu Sovereignty - A technocratic faction that believes humanity can only evolve by rediscovering and tapping the lost technology of the Vanu.

•BATTLE FOR TERRITORIES & RESOURCES: The core gameplay of PlanetSide 2 is about holding key territories and controlling valuable resources. Each battleground holds valuable resources and key positions, and the empire that can conquer (and manage to hold) these territories will be rewarded with fuel bonuses, ammo bonuses, tech bonuses, and more.

•PERSISTENCE: In Planetside 2 battles will last longer than a match timer. Battles will last for days or weeks, and finally taking control of the base means it's yours until someone can take it back. Working strategically as a team to capture key tactical positions such as power plants and ammo depots will have long-lasting effects that can shift the tide of battle.

•ENORMOUS MAPS: PlanetSide 2 will launch with several continent maps; every inch of which will be contestable space. With the new territorial control meta-game, landmass will have intrinsic value even without notable installations or major features.

•FREE-FORM CLASS-BASED SYSTEM: Players will be able to unlock diverse combat roles by advancing through the skill tree, including several classic roles from PlanetSide. As players unlock new roles, they will be able to switch between them at will.

•MISSION SYSTEM: Both SOE and players will be able to drive content, easing new players into the game and allowing veterans to feed content to players.

•SKILL TREES: Players will be able to build their soldier to match their play-style, or to match the needs of their squad, outfit or empire. Each combat role, vehicle and weapon will have extensive skill trees. These cert trees will allow players to grow characters laterally, unlocking weapons, attachments, equipment, specialized skills, and more.

•OUTFITS: Outfits (guilds) will also be able to customize themselves - allowing outfits to have their own identity, reputation and role in the ongoing war.

•WEAPONS: Players will be able to access more than 20 basic weapons, which can be customized to players' preference or purpose.

•VEHICLES: A total of 15 vehicles, with two unique vehicles per empire. Players will be able to customize each vehicle, unlocking new skills and features

•VIVOX INTEGRATION: Players will be able to communicate with their squads both through keyboard and voice chat.

    Iracing.com Begs customers to return

So the above was sent out to those that had been iracing.com members trying to get that back with huge cuts of almost 25 dollars plus giving you in game money to spend.
Will it be enough to bring back the old guard that got sick of iracings less then up to par customer service?

Time will tell but in a bad economy people don't really give company's a second chance unless the pot is sweet, this pot while interesting will not bring people back.

Iracing needs to do one or the other.... charge top dollar for sub and zero for monthly fee or have monthly fee and free content or dlc. The days of getting the masses to do both ARE OVER. Smarten up.

With games like gt5, shift, codemasters f1 , cutting the perspective share iracing is in trouble with there current model and now that they have siphoned there fan base for 3 years there realizing they hit there ceiling. So many got fed up with quality of races being fail at best and then to have two guys moderate thousands of drivers is well FAIL.

Hope they wise up. Good product with a bad business plan.

SwordandKeyboard: Rift the Game Forums, Errupting with Mad Gamers!!!

WOW! It is a revolution my friends! Rift the game is maybe now rift the slain? It seems rift which 2 months ago was being propped up as a WOW killer and revolutionary MMO is now being crucified on there own forums for major game flaws.

Rift seems to be a Delightful new fresh approach with tons to do is now being taunted on there own forums as another flop. Is this true? Or is this just ramblings of over opinionated gamers?

Below is things Rift does a fantastic job at... better then any other new mmo I personally have seen. I have played about 15 -20 start up mmo's, this has been smoothest launch i have ever seen. Other then the bad decision making of adding 30 servers the 1st week I think the launch has been amazing.

Lets work this out... major things a MMO needs to be successful?

A+ Smooth Game Play .... check!
A+ Really good graphics .... check!
    A+ Tons of Quests .......... check !
A+ Solid amounts of Content check!
    A+ Dedicated Staff ............. Check!

    CHECK CHECK CHECK CHECK

Level 50 problems in Rift - boring and not properly planned out....

So what is the problem? The problem is subscribers are sick of paying money for games that promise a lot then fail to meet promises.
    This Dev promises following:

Rift is not world of warcraft (a game i cannot stand but is 100 x more to do then rift), hell rift is not even as good as conan or warhammer if your a pvper. Rifts basically are a rip off of warhammer's bo / pq system, atleast warhammer had a group finder, guild bank, and even a guild finder. Rift is a game that is amazing and boring at the same time a hard thing to accomplish, this is something that is hard to achieve in the gaming world.

My hope is they fix there game and work as hard in the next year as they have worked in the past year. They still can be a huge success. Its not to late.

Seriously wow has nothing to worry about.

    SwordandKeyboard.com : Dust 514 : EVE ONLINE

I've always been academically fascinated by EVE Online -- any game with an economy robust enough to have its own crises is worth noting -- but its mechanics have always seemed remote, obtuse, and cold. Besides buying, selling, and trading, what is there to do, really? The answer to that is "play Dust 514," CCP's recently-announced FPS-strategy hybrid.
After the break, you can find a video of not only the new trailer for Dust 514, but CCP boss Hilmar Peturrson's presentation. "Dust battlefields will dictate who controls specific planets inside the EVE MMO," explains Peturrson, offering the clearest and most concise description of the game I've heard yet. To hear Peturrson tell it, EVE's various contractors and companies will be the ones funding Dust mercenary forces on the ground, the ultimate goal being that "these communities will meld over time." The presentation closes with a bit of cheek -- "While the fleet does the flying, the infantry does the dying" -- and the promise that someone "exceedingly clever" will figure out what the title means.
CCP Shanghai seem to have an exceedingly ambitious project on their hands. I'm not sure how multi-platform guild management is going to work, but I do know that CCP is taking the concept of the MMO in a direction I've never considered before. Most believe that neither MMOs nor real-time strategy games could possibly work on a console, but CCP seems determined to prove them wrong.

Sword and Keyboard: Blizzard: WoW Going free to play?

(this is a article posted on pc gamer.. here is the link to it ..... http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/06/30/blizzard-discuss-making-world-of-warcraft-free/ i subscribe to pcgamer and enjoy there articles.)

The rise of the free-to-play western MMO hasn’t gone unnoticed at Blizzard, developers of World of Warcraft, the dominant western subscription MMO. Speaking to PC Gamer at their studios in Irvine, California, World of Warcraft’s lead designer, Tom Chilton, explained that “at some point, it may not make sense for us to have a subscription fee.”

Tom was speaking about the rapid expansion of free-to-play games in the west, and the terms under which Blizzard would consider a similar model for World of Warcraft. In the last year, classic western hardcore online games such as Lord of the Rings Online, Company of Heroes and Dungeons and Dragons Online have all embraced a free-to-play model, where microtransactions and item purchases are a substitute for a traditional subscription fee.

Yet Tom doesn’t think those games have gone free just to compete with World of Warcraft. “I feel like they’re doing that to compete with other games that are on a similar subscriber level to what they were at. I imagine that when one of them went free to play it cannibalized some of the other subscribers. I can definitely imagine that being the case with World of Warcraft. If another game comes along and blows us away it may not make sense for us to have a subscription fee. Or even further down the line, when we have another MMO out.”
While the western view of World of Warcraft is that it’s a subscription-only MMO, the Blizzard team have long experimented with alternates to a traditional subscription to remain competitive in different markets. Multiple micro-transaction items are available to buy for the most committed World of Warcraft players – including shiny star horses, and warrior panda pets. In Korea, the game is sold purely via subscription fee, with no boxed product available. And Korean World of Warcraft subscribers will get to play StarCraft II for free, too. In Russia, StarCraft II is sold in small monthly instalments – a salve to a market where piracy is rampant.
Don’t cancel your subscription just yet though: WoW isn’t going free-to-play in the near term. When asked if Blizzard were actively considering the implications of a free-to-play model, Tom played down the idea of the game switching over right away. “We’re not spending a lot of time thinking about it. It’s not something that’s a reality for us in the near future.”
We’ve got much, much more on World of Warcraft: Cataclysm in the new issue of PC Gamer, on-sale tomorrow. We’ll be posting more Cataclysm news, impressions, and interviews over the coming week.
